The Tuition Fee Income Tax Rebate helps Manitobans pay for their education and encourages them to live, work and raise a family right here at home, by providing post-secondary graduates with a 60% income tax rebate on their eligible tuition fees. (The post-secondary institution must be recognized by Canada Revenue to qualify.)

You are eligible for the Tuition Fee Income Tax Rebate if you graduated from any recognized post-secondary institution in the world on or after January 1, 2007, and now work and pay taxes in Manitoba. If you are no longer living in Manitoba, you would not be entitled to receive benefits under this tuition rebate program.

The benefit is non-refundable which means that it can reduce the taxes you pay but no amount is paid directly to you. The first claim can be made on your 2007 income tax return, which will be completed in the spring of 2008. This credit is not transferable to a parent or someone else - it must be claimed by the graduate.

The documentation needed to support your claim, if requested, will be your T2202A, which is proof of tuition amounts paid, and proof of your graduation such as a diploma, degree or certificate.

Although you must reside and work in Manitoba to claim this rebate you can defer it up to ten years - with the benefit being applied over 6 to 20 years.

For example:

If a graduate who meets all the required criteria goes to work for the OPP or RCMP (out of province) and then takes a lateral move to return to work in Manitoba between January 1, 2007 and January 1, 2017, they can still claim this rebate.
